Georgia’s gubernatorial race is heating up and one Republican candidate is making sure to let voters know that he intends to make the state as racist and unwelcoming as possible. That’s the idea behind the “Deportation Bus Tour,” which State Sen. Michael Williams began on Tuesday as he took his hate-filled campaign across the state.
As Huffington Post reports, Williams wants to be a one-man deportation force who rounds up undocumented immigrants who he has labeled as rapists, murders, kidnappers, and child molesters. No need to guess what Williams thinks about immigrants—he’s written these hideous lies all across his demented little school bus for everyone to see.
Michael Williams, who was his state’s co-chair for President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, said the tour aims to “shine a light on the dangers of sanctuary cities and the overwhelming problem of illegal immigration.” [...]
“We’re not just going to track them and watch them roam around our state, we’re going to put them on this bus and send them home,” Williams said in a video promoting the bus trip.
Williams plans to stop in three cities in the state—Clarkston, Decatur, and Athens, all of which are sanctuary cities that have decided to limit police cooperation with immigration officials. Apparently, he has little respect for the autonomy of these city’s governments to decide what is best for their residents. Instead he wants to fearmonger, divide, and scare the crap out of people, even though he doesn’t actually have a plan for how he’s going to detain and force undocumented immigrants out of the state. When asked about this, Williams had nothing to say.
It’s unclear how the politician plans to lawfully apprehend immigrants, let alone deport them. Williams did not respond to a request for comment.
This is repugnant. And while Donald Trump and his buddies like Williams want to drag the country kicking and screaming back tomthe days of Jim Crow, the rest of us want progress. Georgians deserve so much better than this. That’s why it’s vital to elect a progressive governor who represents Georgia’s future, not its past.
The Democratic primary in Georgia is Tuesday, May 22. Let’s help Daily Kos-endorsed candidate Stacey Abrams win so she can defeat the racism and xenophobia of state Republicans in November.
