Nevada Sen. Dean Heller is begging Donald Trump not to shut down the government over border wall funding between now and November’s elections, but Trump isn’t making any promises to the Senate’s most vulnerable Republican. Trump is signaling that he might opt for a government shutdown when funding runs out on September 30 if he doesn’t get his wall.
Picking that fight during an election season would hurt Republicans at the ballot box, Heller told Trump, according to an attendee and two people briefed on the meeting. Though Heller prefaced his request by heaping praise on the president, Trump was noncommittal. “We’ll see what happens,” he told the group.
Heller remains in full suck-up mode, saying in a statement that “Congress needs to do its job now and get the government funded before we break in August.” True! But Trump needs to be willing to sign that funding bill even when it doesn’t include tens of billions of dollars for his precious border wall, and “We’ll see what happens” is not a promise there.
