The Trump administration is slapping a gag on women’s health providers. Federal funding does not cover abortion under the current law, but Trump’s Health and Human Services secretary, Alex Azar, is going a step further and pulling funding from organizations that even refer women to other healthcare providers for abortions.
One Trump official said the rule would give Planned Parenthood and other groups that receive federal family planning money a choice: Disentangle themselves from abortion or lose government funding.
The official said the policy would require “a bright line of physical as well as financial separation” between programs that receive Title X funding and those that perform, support or make referrals for abortions.
This “dangerous” policy, said Planned Parenthood’s Dawn Laguens, “is designed to force doctors and nurses to lie to their patients. It would have devastating consequences across this country.” That devastation will occur mostly among low- and middle-income women, though, so the Trump administration just does. not. care.
Can you chip in $3 to help Planned Parenthood in the face of this latest Republican attack?
