Vista Outdoor owns major gun manufacturer Savage Arms. They are currently having a public episode of Sad because owning a pro-murder company turns out to somewhat awkward after episodes of mass murder in our nation's schools. Because this episode of Sad may substantially affect their financial outlook, they were obliged to file their official Sad with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Vista Outdoor bemoans online activity “in the wake of tragic shootings at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in February 2018” that may have “an adverse effect on our business, financial condition, results of operations and or cash flows.”
The company blames “a substantial increase in the use of social media platforms, including blogs, social media websites, and other forms of Internet-based communications, which allow individuals access to a broad audience of consumers.”
In other words, boycotts organized after the Parkland, Florida mass murder pose a significant risk to the company, especially because in these Wild West social media days of hurting corporate feelings willy-nilly the resulting "harm," quote, "may be immediate without affording us an opportunity for redress or correction.
Upon hearing this, you may be feeling sorry for Vista Outdoor and their manlyman-named gun manufacturing business. Don't. In fact, fuck 'em.
As Mother Jones reported in its 2016 investigation into America’s biggest gun manufacturers, Savage Arms operated around-the-clock shifts to keep up with demand after the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in 2012. Savage’s profits that year reportedly rose sixfold. In 2015, Mark W. DeYoung, Vista and Savage’s then-CEO, earned $13.2 million.
Thoughts and prayers, fellas. Thoughts and prayers to you and the horse you rode in on.
