Greetings from ground zero in the abortion debate, Iowa’s capitol city. Our state’s Republicans have decided to test the bounds of how far they can restrict abortion without running afoul of Roe v Wade. Here in Gilead, they passed what was called the “Fetal Heartbeat Bill” last week and it was signed by the governor the following day. Midwest conservatism has now been fully taken over by the Steve King’s of the state. Obviously, the idea is to trigger a lawsuit that will test Roe. We’ll see where that leads.
And now, a word from our sponsors ...
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
This is the world we live in now. A very serious challenge to Roe v Wade has been laid down and the gauntlet has been thrown down. The ACLU has already filed the suit and I’m sure it will work its way through the system. In the meantime, failing an injunction, the women of this state will suffer. We already have the second fewest number of OB/GYNs in the nation and this bill will force more women out of the state for healthcare.
Meanwhile, I was driving home yesterday and passed a pickup flying both the Gadsden and Confederate flags. Not stickers mind you, but real flags. I also saw a man at the mall wearing a t shirt reading “Fuck Your Gun Free Zone”. So yeah, Iowa has been a gas. Anyone hiring back in the blue states? We gotta pack up and go. Soon.
That’s all I have this week, so I’ll share some video from last night’s SNL.
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.

From gchaucer2:
I wrote a basically innocuous comment re: a WaPo article on spacing between sentences in the very polite APR. Serious discussion ensued (almost pie fight level). And here is Heavy Mettle's most brilliant reply -- I'm still laughing.
From twingrace:
neuroguy's comment in response to Macchiavelli's assertion that the bottom third of voters is at ... the bottom, not only reaches a pithy and apt conclusion, but reminds us of the way forward. From Crashing Vor’s recommended post 40%.
