As Trump went off the rails on his mission of alienating our closest allies, he tweeted:
PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, 'US Tariffs were kind of insulting' and he 'will not be pushed around.' Very dishonest & weak. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!
Note the last sentence. “Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!" That’s interesting, because Trump originally said that the tariffs were imposed because of national security concerns. So, he admitted that the whole national security thing was a lie.
This is significant because he needs the national security thing as a legal justification for his tariffs. A national security issue is the only thing that gives him the legal power to unilaterally impose tariffs.
Remember, Trump holds authority to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum because—and only because—of a Kennedy-era special exemption to normal trade law for national-security purposes. Trump has signed documents attesting that he imposed tariffs to protect vital defense interests of the United States.
So, not only has Trump lied to the public, he signed documents that he now has tacitly admitted were fraudulent. This is yet another impeachable offense. Where is Congress?
