I was watching the evening news the other night when they interviewed a group of Evangelical Trump supporters.
The reporter asked what they thought about Donald Trump on a variety of issues: “Do you think he’ll broker peace with North Korea?” “Do you believe he had an affair with a Porn Star?” “Will ‘The Wall’ ever be built, and if so, will Mexico pay for it?” “Do you approve of his Trade Policy?” “Do you think the Russia Scandal is real?” and “Do you think he is hurting our image around the world?” Naturally, even when disappointed, each gave Trump the benefit of the doubt on every issue. They adore the man, believe every word he says, and have faith that the foul-mouthed, thrice-married, adulterous racist billionaire was ordained by God to save America from itself.
Listening to this, I was suddenly reminded of all the Evangelicals who told us ten years ago that the “Cult of Personality” surrounding the newly elected President Obama was “proof” that he was “the antichrist.”
We were told a “Cult of Personality” was forming around then President-elect Obama who was “promising to transform America and even the world.” His slavish followers were accused of “placing him above Christ”, worshiping him like a God. “He is promising to bring peace to the world and end all wars.” Apparently, promising “good” things is a “bad” thing… if you’re a Democrat. President Obama’s “deadly, seducing, deceitful words” belie “a cult of personality” said to “mesmerize his believers.” They call “his supporters’ behavior ‘crazy’ and ‘cultish’. “He acts like he wants to be both president and savior.” The nation “is falling prey to President Obama idolatry. His image is everywhere and is on everything” like some sort of TV star who brands everything he owns.
“Many have attested to his messianic complex and the effect Obama’s presence has on a crowd.”
Obama’s ability to excite a crowd was compared to Hitler’s rallies. People will claim he was “chosen by God”, “hand-selected” no less by The Creator Himself to save the world from itself.
"In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be [hope and] changed." (I Cor.15:52) — Yes, that Bible quote they used to warn us of Obama actually contains the word “trump”.
Newsweek reported in 2008: Signs the Antichrist had returned include: “natural disasters [and] other cataclysms (such as the collapse of financial markets)”... a “leader who gathers governments and economies under his command to further his own evil agenda.” Has anyone seen Hawaii, Guatemala & Puerto Rico lately? And the less said about a possible Global Trade War, the better.
And before you ask, “NO”, I’m NOT saying “Trump is the antichrist.” No one dropped me on my head as a baby. I just enjoy pointing out inconsistency, lunacy & hypocrisy on the far Right. I’ve seen far more Evangelicals turning a blind eye to Trump’s boorish, hateful, reckless, misogynistic, juvenile narcissism, describing him as “heaven sent” than I ever saw of Obama supporters.
Even a columnist for Progressive staple Mother Jones Magazine wrote two weeks after Obama’s inauguration: “Barack Obama has a messiah complex and no one will convince me otherwise.”
6+6+6 = 18. “barack hussein obama”? 18 characters. Coincidence?
Yes, you numbnuts. “Ronald Wilson Reagan”… 18 characters.
Ugh.
