While top Republicans are silent on Donald Trump torching longstanding global alliances, a few Republicans are speaking out. The names won’t surprise you—and neither will the likely outcome of their words, if you’ve been paying any attention at all.
Maybe it’s not who Jeff Flake is personally, but it’s definitely who many of his Republican Senate colleagues are. It is your party, if your party is the Republican Party in 2018.
“We must preserve this friendship,” huh? Here’s the thing, guys: Donald Trump may be able to damage alliances with a couple of tweets, but you can’t fix them that way. You need to do something.
Sen. John McCain also tweeted criticism of Trump, saying that “To our allies: bipartisan majorities of Americans remain pro-free trade, pro-globalization & supportive of alliances based on 70 years of shared values. Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn’t.” And if McCain currently gets a brain cancer pass on doing anything beyond tweeting, not one other Senate Republican gets that pass, and most of them aren’t even doing the very least they can do by tweeting weak tea criticism.
