Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and at least a dozen House Democrats are expected to go to the U.S./Mexico border next week to visit at least one detention facility for children torn from their migrant parents due to the Trump administration’s barbaric policy, Politico reports:
The California Democrat will accompany about 15 other Democrats on the trip Monday to San Diego, which is being organized by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, according to multiple House sources.
Congressional Republicans have been silent regarding attacks on families seeking asylum while a number of Democratic leaders, including Congressmember Pramila Jayapal of Washington and U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon, have traveled to detention facilities to advocate for families. While Merkley was blocked from entering one facility—staffers called the cops on him—Jayapal met with a number of detained moms separated from their kids. And it was heartbreaking.
“They spoke of fleeing threats of rape, gang violence and political persecution,” she said. “They spoke of their children who have been killed by gangs and their fear of being raped. The mothers could not stop crying when they spoke about their children—young girls and boys who were taken from them with no chance to say goodbye and no plan for reunification.”
Of course the administration is being so secretive about detention facility conditions because even they know that this is a horror show, and one that congressional Republicans are complicit in by standing with their hands in their pockets. To date, not one single Senate Republican has joined U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein’s bill blocking the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from tearing families at the border apart.
