Rachel Maddow spent time last night illustrating how the Right’s relentless attacks on the FBI (and Media) results in favorable treatment as both the FBI and Media over-compensate to prove they aren’t biased.
An excerpt from D. Halberstam’s book “The Fifties” documents how a somewhat similar dynamic existed during the McCarthy era. McCarthy created a spectacle and it didn’t matter if his facts were wrong or nonexistent. Those standing up to him were labeled the enemy. Most were happy to go along and get a story with a sensational headline on the front page. McCarthy was a Senator, after all. He was ‘news’.
It’s good to know historical precedents to inform us how to go forward. I would argue that Giuliani is no longer worthy of coverage nor is Sanders or any White House press conference. Except any new Press Secretary… and only that for as long as it takes to gauge how easily they will lie for Trump and Republicans. The Media is and has been complicit by giving oxygen to bulls*t and allowing themselves to be distracted by the spectacle.
If they spent so much time covering the non-existant Clinton Foundation issue so they didn’t appear to favor her that still doesn’t resolve why no deep dives uncovered all the criminal tax-evading activity by Trump, his family and Foundation. Why spend so much time at Trump rallies showing an EMPTY PODIUM while waiting for the orange blivet to even show up?
