A letter my wife sent this morning. She is of Mexican heritage.
The current policy of separating immigrant families reminds me of other atrocities in our history. Here are a few:
• When Mexican immigrants entered the US during the 1930s, they were doused with DDT. But the families stayed together.
• When the US forced Japanese-Americans to move to internment camps during WWII. But the families stayed together.
• When Nazis interred Jews in the concentration camps, tearing families apart.
• When slave-owners before the US Civil War sold slaves, tearing families apart.
By separating children from parents, we are causing irreparable harm to immigrant families. This current practice makes me ashamed to be an American.
Please use all your powers of persuasion to end this practice immediately.
I’m wondering if the only thing that can stop this government from more atrocities is to shut down the country. In Europe they have a tradition of a general strike, shutting down transportation, city services, etc.
Maybe we just shut down some vital, vulnerable industry. Suppose we held our next mass rally at the airports, driving round and round the car access points, making it almost impossible to get in and out. The planes would fly, but they would fly empty.
Just a thought.
