I was very encouraged when a member of my church pointed out this Confession of Faith to me this week. It clearly states some of the things I believe as a Christian. If you are interested in how at least some church leaders are speaking out, take a few minutes to read the whole confession. http://reclaimingjesus.org/
WE BELIEVE each human being is made in God’s image and likeness (Genesis 1:26). THEREFORE, WE REJECT the resurgence of white nationalism and racism in our nation
WE BELIEVE we are one body. In Christ, there is to be no oppression based on race, gender, identity, or class (Galatians 3:28).
THEREFORE, WE REJECT misogyny, the mistreatment, violent abuse, sexual harassment, and assault of women
WE BELIEVE how we treat the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the stranger, the sick, and the prisoner is how we treat Christ himself. (Matthew 25: 31-46)
THEREFORE, WE REJECT the language and policies of political leaders who would debase and abandon the most vulnerable children of God. We strongly deplore the growing attacks on immigrants and refugees, … We won’t accept the neglect of the well-being of low-income families and children, and we will resist repeated attempts to deny health care to those who most need it. ... We reject the immoral logic of cutting services and programs for the poor while cutting taxes for the rich.
WE BELIEVE that truth is morally central to our personal and public lives.
THEREFORE, WE REJECT the practice and pattern of lying that is invading our political and civil life.
WE BELIEVE that Christ’s way of leadership is servanthood, not domination.
THEREFORE, WE REJECT any moves toward autocratic political leadership and authoritarian rule.
It’s good to speak out against Trump as a bad person — he is. It’s better, and even more appropriate, to speak out against the entire republican agenda — their policies are immoral and must be rejected.
I hope to hear more church leaders endorse this confession. My only regret is that my denomination is not represented in the list of authors. But I know many in my local congregation agree wholeheartedly with it.
