In an attempt to assuage the delicate sensibilities of the pearl clutchers at the New York Times,we are treated to ruminations of Katie Rogers and Peter Baker in the article: In Trump Era, Talk Gets Ugly and Angry, Starting at the Top.
They lament that although the elected leader of the free world engages in coarse language, and calls pretty much anyone who isn’t a white male native born American or murderous dictator a murderer, backstabber, rapist or a piece of meat to be grabbed by their genitalia, the opposition, by calling him bad things like a Nazi (including actual people who were victimized by real Nazis in Nazi Germany, so they ought to know), an idiot, orange bloviator or dropping the F bomb in public are just as responsible for the erosion of civility in our great nation.
Maybe these two intrepid reporters have a point, why can’t the we all be civil like they are in North Korea, Russia or Nazi Germany? In those places, the opposition would never use coarse language against their leaders, in fact, they sit up straight and allow them to speak their minds without any interruption at all.
President Trump has politely asked us to sit up straight when he talks, and what do we do? We say mean things about him instead. Maybe if we were more polite to our president, he would be more polite to us as well. Maybe he would even stop kidnapping babies, grabbing private parts, accusing millions of people of rape or throwing things at other world leaders when they don’t agree with him, if we would just all get along and be civil.
After all, that North Korean General was polite to him, and President Trump returned the politeness with a salute. We didn’t hear anything about Trump throwing anything at Kim Jong Un, kidnapping children or grabbing at any vaginas while he was in North Korea, did we?
Angela Merkel could learn a thing or two about civility from him.
What I fear most is if we are not civil and polite to our President and his administration, he might start throwing things at us as well.
