My district, of which I have been a resident of in Queens for the last six years, deserves a working class hero. The current occupant of the seat is Joe Crowley, most noted as the #4 democrat in the House who is in line to be our next speaker.
Crowley, in nearly twenty years has never faced a real primary opponent and has been caught off guard. His district has changed dramatically since he was unethically handed the seat from the previous retiring congressman.
Crowley has a real race problem
Crowley graduated from Queens College in 1985 while his uncle, Walter Crowley, was serving as a city councilor — a seat he had inherited from then-Queens party boss Tom Manton. Walter Crowley died in 1985, and according to subsequent New York Times reporting, Joe Crowley “set his eyes” on the seat, but was thwarted. “[W]hen Assemblyman Ralph Goldstein died in 1986, Mr. Crowley decided to run in the Democratic primary to succeed him. It was a crowded race with seven candidates. Mr. Crowley, then 24, won that race decisively,” the Times reported.
Crowley fended off a primary challenger in 1988, winning comfortably.
In 1999, when Manton, by then a member of Congress, retired, Crowley {snip} was effectively appointed to Congress by the party boss. Crowley also inherited Manton’s role as the new “king of Queens,” and has run the district machine since then. He had todefend his seat against primary challengers in 2002 and 2004 and each time won comfortably.
Despite having been in elected office for more than 30 years, Crowley has faced just four primary contests, and won them all comfortably. He has not faced a challenger since 2004.
District 14 deserves a working class hero who does not just appear on NETFLIX or the big screen. I voted this morning for change and am supporting the progressive candidate in this race. If Crowley gets knocked out today, he has pledged not to appear on the ballot under the WFP (Working Family Party), which endorsed Crowley. This race has the potential to change the face of democratic party politics. A comparable event was when David Bratt knocked out Eric Cantor in 2014.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has run an issues based campaign with inspirational policies to advocate in Congress.
Her real estate backed opponent has continued using tone deaf language about the “meat and potatoes” of politics and actively whining about it “not being his fault he was born white.”
Ugh — and they said Bernie had a race problem “eye roll”.
If you live in district 14 — VOTE!
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is crashing the gate today! The polls close at 9 pm tonight! She can make history today!
