Because we know, inherently, what we have done to “others” may come back around to “us”. We know as a culture and what America sprang from where our past is. And we do not want what we have done to others to be perpetrated upon us.
Racism is “inherent” to an extent. It brews in our surroundings and our comfort zones. I like to think I’m not racist. But I have tendencies in situations where I look at people and make assumptions. Where did that assumption come from? It is taught and it is learned. I like to think that what I have learned was more inherent from surroundings than shoved down my throat through family. I’ve never thought anyone in my family was racist and I certainly was never trained in hatred of any “other”. I just simply wasn’t. I was never taught to hate anyone. Ever. A lot of people unfortunately don’t have that “luxury”?.
I like to think that in my middle class life and up bringing I was given a choice because I wasn’t exposed to any particular hatred. Nor was I exposed to any regimented religious upbringing. I was left to my own understanding in a way that left everything kind of wide open. I was left to experience life as it came and never pushed one way or another on anything.
If you’ve ever been to jail you might have a different perspective regarding the what and the why and the who and the when. I’m an alcoholic who’s been to jail. I don’t think anyone can get a good perspective of just who is jailed and why without a first hand experience of our criminal system. Being a skinny white dude thrown into a jail system that was predominantly Hispanic and black? Let me tell you, I was exposed to some nasty shit and have experiences that could have easily skewed my view on “people of color”. I was the minority. And I did get fucked with.
So think of that situation knowing all that we have done to “others”. Now have the tables turned and have you be the “minority”.Comfortably racist white folks are scared to death knowing how they feel, how they openly treat people, how so fucking deep down they KNOW they are wrong, can have the situation turn around against them?
They are fucking scared and we have what we have right now. Nationalist pride? It’s pushback in fear of what could happen to them.
I lack the writing skills to put all things “thought” in proper perspective but I’m trying. Hopefully some of you can break down some of the above and understand the effort. I think my thought process and what I see right now will make the above understandable…this is open ended social commentary.
White people in general, with the inherent knowing of what white culture has done...are scared to death. I see the videos of older white Americans lashing out gleefully ragging on Hispanics. They cling to something. They feel emboldened right now. And we know why. They are scared to death of becoming the “minority”. Because they know...
