The tweet House Republicans have been waiting for from popular vote loser Donald Trump for over a week now finally came, in a scream.
That reads like an act of petulant rebellion, Trump finally giving in to the ceaseless entreaties of advisers and leadership in the House and saying "here, I'm doing it. Here's your stupid tweet and the whole thing is stupid because it won't pass in the Senate anyway BECAUSE THE DEMS. Satisfied?" (Oh, and no one calls it Goodlatte II.) Just five days ago, Trump was telling them that they should "should stop wasting their time on Immigration."
It's still a waste of time, not because of Senate Democrats but because the House Republican caucus is splintered and can't agree on it and there isn't anything they would agree on.
"There's no unicorn—nothing that Jim Jordan would vote for that Carlos Curbelo could ever support," said one senior GOP aide, referring to a non-existent bill that could bridge the gap between the conference's most conservative and moderate members. "And vice versa." […]
"There have been a number of negotiations and in each of those negotiations there have been certain members who have added a whole bunch to it, but could never get to yes," one Republican member familiar with the negotiations told CNN. "I think we are proving to ourselves that Republicans cannot pass an immigration bill."
At least one Republican lawmaker recognizes reality.
