Just watched Chris Hayes and Rachel Maddow — abetted by Senator Chris Murphy (D, CT) — engage in industrial grade wishful thinking.
This is what they are arguing:
1. Back in February 2016, when Scalia died, McConnell announced the Senate would not approve a replacement named by Obama because 2016 is an election year and the Senate should not consider a SCOTUS nominee until “the people speak,”
2. 2018 is an election year, therefore, McConnell should adhere to the principle he established in 2016.
3. Therefore, we are safe.
BULLSHIT. McConnell will ram through the Senate right now anyone Trump appoints. He will simply ignore his 2016 argument because it’s not convenient.
Hypocritical? Do you really believe McConnell gives a goddam about being a hypocrite?
Inconsistent? Do you really believe McConnell gives a goddam about being inconsistent?
Hanging our hat on Collins or Murkowski is useless. Hanging our hat on McConnell sticking with his 2016 position is equally useless.
The nation is screwed.
What to do? I’m marching, writing letters, sending faxes and emails, marching some more, raising hell. I’m also preparing to sell out and leave the country.
I grew up in a place where my mother was not permitted to get credit in her name. There was no birth control. Abortion was illegal. There were no women's sports programs in school. Black people had to sit in the back of the bus and could be murdered for trying to register to vote. Gays were arrested and imprisoned. Schools were segregated. Blacks could not join most trade unions, everything was segregated.
And where did I grow up? In America in the 50's. If you did not experienced these things, you will soon get your chance.
