I was just on Twitter when I saw this for the first time, and it lit me up that I hadn’t heard it sooner:
The June 29th press release on Harris’ website gives detail and a link to the draft legislation, AND it told me about another thing that I missed:
This is the Senate companion to legislation introduced last week in the House of Representatives by Congressman Bobby L. Rush (H.R. 6086) and 36 members of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Well isn't that quaint! Guess people will all hush up about that any day now and move along.
I think we owe it to ourselves here to figure out a way to support the federalization of anti-lynching. Like voting rights, it is a change that symbolically stands for the better America we are all fighting for. Also, if you haven’t seen pictures of the EJI museum exhibit yet, it’s a companion to this push for change:
I get that this isn’t a polisci 700 word piece on this. I usually get irrational, overloaded and unclear when I try to go THERE.
HOW do WE get behind this? The simple version why is, “Senator, why are you not willing to take a position against lynching?” Followed by specific lynchings from their state.
