Which of these is the best example of effectively putting pressure on the Trumps and their minions? Is it, as the Huffington Post breathlessly reported, Piers Morgan being “mercilessly bashed by Twitter users” for hyping a sycophantic interview with his white nationalist hero, Donald Trump? Or is it the neighbors of Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump who yelled and held up signs in front of their home that read, “Tell Daddy, enough!”, during a protest against the Trump/GOP Babysnatching Program?
Yes, it feels good to quickly respond to the latest fascist outrage, plus it’s easy to just send a tweet. It feels like you’ve struck a blow for the side of justice. But in truth, you’ve accomplished nothing. Your target probably will mute or block you, if they even see your tweet at all. Worse, they won’t feel even slightly inclined to curb their antisocial behavior. Why should they? It’s just a tweet.
However, when you’re a Trump supporter or an actual Trump and your neighbors are angrily, but peacefully, denouncing you, that's going to register. When you are confronted in a public place by strangers who, without any threat of violence, give you a piece of their mind, that may prompt some internal review of one’s career choice (eh, Secretary Pruitt?).
“But I need Twitter to keep up with what’s going on,” you say. No, you don’t. You have DailyKos. You have Indivisible. You have The Democratic Party. These and other sites can give you the info and the means to actually be part of the movement to stop the right wing cancer that has consumed the GOP, the US government, and now threatens democracy, itself.
So drop Twitter, as I did over a year ago (I had 2000+ followers/bots at the time). Let Jack Dorsey know that if he is going to pander to those who would destroy America and bring chaos to the world, you’ll have nothing further to do with his twisted creation. Be effective. We need you.
