The specter of Donald Trump standing next to Vladimir Putin and declaring that he believed Putin over his own intelligence agencies on Russian election interference has former CIA Director John Brennan saying it "rises to & exceeds the threshold of ‘high crimes & misdemeanors.’ It was nothing short of treasonous. Not only were Trump’s comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin. Republican Patriots: Where are you???"
Where are you, Republicans? Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), one of Trump's favorite golfing buddies, calls it a "Missed opportunity by President Trump to firmly hold Russia accountable for 2016 meddling and deliver a strong warning regarding future elections." Then he changes the subject. "It is imperative that Congress hold hearings on the extent and scope of any cooperation with Russia in Syria regarding Iran’s presence."
The always reliable Trump detractor, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), who also a totally reliable vote for Trump in the Senate, is disappointed. "I never thought I would see the day when our American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression. This is shameful." What he intends to do about it isn't stated. Because he probably intends to do nothing.
Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) is another one of those Republicans who regularly expresses his very sincere disappointment in his president and who never actually stands up to him. His statement says that "This is bizarre and flat-out wrong. The United States is not to blame. […] When the President plays these moral equivalence games, he gives Putin a propaganda win he desperately needs." Okay, and what are you going to do about it? Crickets.
And then you've got Rep. Darrell Issa, (R-CA) who has no problem telling the Republican truth.
Yep. They’re standing by their man.
