We will almost surely never know what actually happened during that fateful clandestine meeting last week between a United States president and the head of state who ordered an attack on the 2016 U.S. election. There was no stenographer present, no aides, the White House hasn't even provided a read-out based on Trump's addled recollection of what happened (let alone an actual transcript of the meeting), and now the press shop says they've given quite enough information already.
“We’ve addressed it pretty extensively,” press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Monday morning, pointing to interviews Trump has since done in which his rapid contradictory reversals resemble the desperation of an obese hummingbird's battle to continue defying gravity. During Monday’s press briefing, Sanders assured reporters that Trump had debriefed all the relevant members of his administration about the summit. Asked if Trump had done so strictly based on his memory, Sanders dodged the question.
But Trump assured America again via tweet Monday morning that he gave up "NOTHING" to Russian President Vladimir Putin. "We merely talked about future benefits for both countries. Also, we got along very well," Trump tweeted.
Great to see Trump got on so swimmingly with the guy who personally authorized a massive effort to hijack the democratic vote of the American people. Just last week, Trump was trying to sell America on the notion that far from submitting to Putin's every demand, he laid down the law to him in the meeting. Now, Trump brags, they "got along very well."
Let's face it, the only thing we will ever learn about the substance of that meeting will either come from Russia's selective leaks about it (which have already poured forth), or possible intelligence intercepts obtained by U.S. authorities. And any such intercepts will likely take time to surface, lest sources be revealed.
