During a Tuesday morning Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the Trump administration’s barbaric “zero tolerance” policy kidnapping migrant children from their parents at the U.S./Mexico border, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois called on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen to resign, calling her “the architect of this humanitarian disaster”:
The Trump administration yet again blew past one of Judge Dana Sabraw’s reunification deadlines, this time claiming that hundreds of parents are “ineligible” to reunite with their own children. Thankfully, Judge Sabraw saw past this bullshit and ordered the administration to turn over information on all of these parents this week in order to proceed with reunification efforts.
Some immigrant and human rights advocates brought their children to the hearing, who were audible in the background. It’s only fitting that Republicans should hear the cries of some of these children, since they continue to ignore the cries of so many others who remain without their parents. This crisis continues, and those who implemented it must be held accountable—and that includes Nielsen resigning from her job in disgrace.
