On the same day Rise and Resist unfurled a banner at the base of the Statue of Liberty a black woman climbed up onto the folds of Lady Liberty’s robe to protest the separation and detention of immigrant children at the United States border. Her name is Therese Patricia Okoumou and she held up a shirt with the words “Rise and Resist” although that group has tweeted Okoumou acted independently.
Okoumou told first responders she wouldn’t come down willingly until all the children held in detention by ICE are released. Please note she's got no climbing gear. The usual suspects are whinging about how this endangers first responders (eye roll).
An inspiring act of civil disobedience.
Okoumou has been detained. It’s reported by Rise and Resist she is being charged with a federal misdemeanor.
