Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Tina Smith’s (D. MN) re-election campaign:
Friends,
I wanted you to hear it from me personally first: I will vote no on Donald Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh. If you are with me, add your name here and go on the record against his nominee.
Tonight I joined my fellow Senators, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, and Jeff Merkley, and more to declare that we are united against Trump’s extreme and dangerous choice for the Supreme Court.
This choice was not made through consensus, with careful reasoning, or taking into account how this appointment will affect the lives of every American -- but from a list of ultra-conservative judges literally handpicked by special interests. And now the Koch network and its political arm are “prepared to commit seven figures to support a nominee in the mold of Neil Gorsuch.”
I will not sit by while our values -- abortion rights, voting rights, workers’ rights, reining in corporate interests -- are hijacked by a conservative base desperate to make change not through democracy and the ballot box, but through the judiciary.
Because when I talk to the people of Minnesota, they are not trying to take away the rights of women, LGBTQ Americans, or give more power to special interests -- they want someone to balance the scales and rule fairly. I do not believe this process, or the choice Trump has made, does that. And I do not believe the people of Minnesota or this country will be served well by his choice.
Now is the tough part. The margin in the Senate will be very close and we will have to raise our voices and fight harder than we have ever before to win. We will face money, a truckload of pressure, and voices on all sides telling us to back down -- that’s why we need to stand together.
Will you stand with me against Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court and say no? Add your name here.
More soon,
Tina
