I feel like my tenure at this fine group that we call Top Comments could be described in one word: procrastination.
More on this in a moment, but a first a word from our always timely sponsors:
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
I’m a flake, and I admit it. It wasn’t always this way; I used to be really annoyed by people who were never on time, or whom you could only depend on to NOT do what they said they were going to do.
But over the last several years, I’ve become what I’ve despised.
I am a flake.
Here’s the deal: I sat down this morning to write about a story that I had (that I couldn’t do last time because reasons [valid ones, but still…. I probably wouldn’t’ve done it anyway]) and then ended up procrastinating. It’s a good story but honestly, it’s one I’ll probably only get around to telling in a few years from now.
Anyway, I sat at the computer and killed a lot of time NOT doing what I needed to do. Then I went outside to sit on the patio and enjoy the afternoon. That’s when a lady showed up and handed me a beer. She’s new to town, new to the building we live in, and wanted to drink a few beers but didn’t want to do it alone.
So I had a beer with her, then she asked if I could drive her to the store because she’d had a few more than I had. I obliged, and she came out of the store with a twelve pack and told me I had to share it with her.
So I did because I may be a flake but I’m also neighborly.
And pretty soon we’re just sitting outside, drinking beer and talking, and I realize I *still* haven’t worked on that awesome story I was going to tell.
And that’s how I found myself with the obligation (though that sounds so negative- it’s not a burden!) to write a decent story in less than an hour, with a buzz and still no idea how to craft the story I wanted to tell so that it was interesting.
TL;DR
I always post either open threads or rambling excuses for why I have nothing interesting to talk about when it’s my night to host Top Comments, and, honestly, there’s no reason to think I’ll do any better than this in the future. (But the series and the amazing group behind it are Top freakin’ Notch and I’m proud to be a part of it.)
Now, on to Tops!
