Whether you’re watching talking heads on television, reading newspaper op-eds or surfing your favorite blogs, the leading question everyone asks is what will it take for trump supporters to finally turn on their idol? The answer, of course, is what difference does it make?
Let’s say a tape pops up with trump saying the “n” word, or a video surfaces showing him in a room with Russian hookers peeing on a bed, if his supporters suddenly say “Whoa dude, that’s a step too far for me, I can no longer support you,” does that redeem them for all the previous things they ignored or stuck with him on?
Does that make them any less gullible, vicious, deliberately ignorant or willing to overlook possible treason? Does it suddenly render the hate-filled rhetoric they spew, the dumb-beyond-reason excuses they make or the aluminum hat conspiracies they buy into any more palatable?
Let’s face it, people who have stood by Cadet Bone Spurs this long have serious deficiencies combined with a deep aversion to reality that we will never understand. The part that we keep forgetting as we watch them continue to pledge their blind allegiance to a man who isn’t fit to be a hall monitor, let alone leader of the free world, is that these people have always existed. From the time our nation was founded until present day there has always been a third of the population who are certified, card-carrying imbeciles.
They are the yardstick by which the rest of us measure our own humanity. I may be a foaming-at-the-mouth moron but hey, at least I’m not a Tump/George Wallace/Father Coughlin/Huey Long/Joseph McCarthy/fill-in-the-blank supporter. Trump supporters, like their predecessors, are people whose lives are driven by fear and deep, ugly anger. They believe that if it wasn’t for the Chinese, Irish, Catholics, Jews, Blacks, Mexicans, Muslims, etc. their lives would be better. They’ve been part of every anti movement that’s ever existed. They burned witches at the stake, cheered at public hangings, jeered at and spit on young Black children trying to go to school, and threw themselves into the hunt for communists hiding under the rug. They are not ever going to go away.
If and when his supporters do eventually abandon trump it will likely not be for a reason that anyone can predict and it won’t change a thing. They won’t be chastened or regretful, they will still exist as exactly as they are, bitching and moaning about how good things were when we were whiter and biding their time until they can find another cipher to pour their malignant energy into.
