The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee is calling for former Trump lawyer/fixer Michael Cohen to testify before the panel concerning his sworn guilty plea that Trump directed him to commit a crime in relation to making hush-money payments to two women.
In a letter to the GOP chair of the committee, Rep. Trey Gowdy, Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings wrote:
Referring to President Trump, Mr. Cohen stated that he committed these crimes "for the principal purpose of influencing the election" and "in coordination with and at the direction of a candidate for federal office." [...]
Given the gravity of these revelations, I request that you schedule a hearing as soon as possible before the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform to obtain sworn testimony directly from Mr. Cohen.
Cummings concluded by saying he had "no doubt" Gowdy would "convene immediate hearings on these matters if the occupant of the White House were a Democrat.”
No doubt is right. How many years and how much money did Gowdy waste trying to find wrongdoing by Hillary Clinton in the Benghazi tragedy? Oh yeah, two years and $7 million, and that was the last of six investigations total conducted by Republicans on the matter. They turned up nothing.
It seems like a president potentially engaging in a criminal conspiracy to defraud the American people might be worthy of a hearing or two, no?
