There’s a new feature from the Daily Kos Staff, penned (so far) by Jessica Sutherland). "Picks of the Week: Our favorite stories from the Daily Kos Community", the first edition, was published August 25th, and the identically titled “Picks of the Week: Our favorite stories from the Daily Kos Community” published August 18, 2018 (I would suggest adding a date to the title).
It seems these differ from the community spotlight stories, which focus on stories that are not receiving as much attention as they ought. I guess the staff picks highlight especially worthy efforts that not only have gained attention but are intrinsically worthwhile. Am I close?
I wondered how these picks would compare to the those on the lists of highly regarded posts I compile each day and each week under the name “high impact”, so I ran them through the list scripts.
For the week ending August 25, 2018, the DK Staff picked 13 posts. One was in a different week, and another didn’t show up on my weekly list due to the number of stories with more recommendations.
The staff picks ranked {1, 6, 16, 18, 21, 22, 24, 36, 41, 44, 60, 78, and unranked} in a weekly list sorted by the number of recommendations (labeled in the accompanying graphic). The unranked story received only half as many recommendations as the next higher story on the list.
DailyKos Staff Picks = 13

These 13 stories, each by a different writer, were all recommended by over 100 readers. All 13 had over 30 commenters and 9 had over 100. Although all 13 writers left comments on diaries, only two recommended diaries.
In summary, each of these 13 was very well received by the Daily Kos community, as well as by the Daily Kos Staff.
It is unclear why these were selected vs the 66 stories of equal or higher rank. See this Week’s High Impact list for the stories not picked. It would be very interesting to hear more about the selection process and criteria for selection.
Thanks to the entire staff for their interest!

time - Post time shown as time of day for daily lists and date for weekly stories.
What, you’re still reading. Dork! Note that the picks account for 15% of the total impact awarded for the week. Also note that the network density (number of connections / possible number of connections) among these authors and stories is 10 times higher than that obtained considering all the week’s high impact stories. This is pretty much due to the restricted number of authors, 13 vs 487.
