I was out in the front yard playing ball with our puppy. He has a squeaky ball that he loves to fetch and bite down on so it squeaks loudly. I’m sure the ball sounds like a pitiful injured critter. At least, it seemed to get that reaction from a Barred Owl that flew in, perched on a nearby cedar (in one of those classic owl against bark poses), and watched our ball game.

The owl was tracking the ball as I threw it and it bounced on the ground giving out a little squeak. When the puppy caught it, he intensified the squeaking of his captured prey before finally bringing it back to me. This went on for a while. It was like the owl was watching a tennis match.
Then a flock of chickadees noticed the owl and started mobbing it until the annoyed owl flew off.
If the squeaky ball goes missing from the front yard when we aren’t around, I’ll have a good idea of where it went.
