After more than 14 years and 233,000 miles, the time has come.
Hubby is pursuing his dream of getting a Tesla (specifically a Model 3). To our surprise, Tesla called just last week to say the car was ready for delivery, mere weeks after he put down the deposit. We were expecting to wait much longer. Delivery will take place tomorrow afternoon, some 100 miles away. (Surely you’re not surprised there’s no Tesla dealer near Erie, PA.)
I decided to offer my car in trade, and then take possession of hubby’s current car, a Honda Fit. It turns out that a 14-year-old car with 233,000+ miles on it and a bad front-end accident in its history isn’t worth much in such a transaction: Just $200. For all that, it’s running exceptionally well these days.
When I learned how little difference the car’s worth would make as trade-in, I briefly considered holding on to it—but only briefly. We have no need for and no place to keep a third car. The other possibility would be to trade in hubby’s car, but given that the Fit gets better mileage and is likely to hold out much longer than my old Subaru, clearly it’s the Subaru that has to go.
This car has taken me and hubby all around the northeast, the midwest and Canada. (Reminiscing, I count traveling in it through 14 US states and 2 Canadian provinces.) The all-wheel drive has saved my butt in the snowy winters here a few times. I’ll certainly miss that. Also, the better mileage of the Fit comes at the price of a significant loss of power. However, we think it’s most important to cut down on our carbon footprint, and this will be a big step in that direction.
So, thank you to my Subaru. To quote the song, you’ve been a good ole wagon, daddy, but you done broke down.

From your humble diarist:
In A DC Wonk’s post pointing to Marcy Wheeler’s take on the Manafort flip, killjoy posted an insightful comment concluding with a colloquial statement of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd laws of thermodynamics: You can’t win; You can’t break even; You can’t quit the game.
Here’s an entertaining comment posted by Origami Oracle in Kerry Eleveld’s post on what Manafort actually knows.
