I mean, really. One might imagine a serious Congress, seeking out a conservative judge of good moral character, with a reasonably spotless record to put forth for a seat on the court, could find one. Just one. At least one. Right?
Think of the benefits:
- No worry about releasing his record. Sure, he’d be conservative, but the liberals can hardly argue he’s not qualified simply because he toes a capitalist pro-corporate line. That’s what you get when you have republicans in power.
- No worry about skeletons in the closet. No question of rape accusations because you really did your due diligence and are certain beyond doubt that this guy is clean.
- No worry about constitutional issues because he has a record of skirting the far right edge of the Constitution, but he’s never advocated torture, theft, or war crimes. He’s never said anything that can be interpreted as being misogynist or racist. Because you vetted him first.
- No question that he holds right of center, but not batshit radical, ideas about civil rights and women’s rights. He’s willing to let “settled law” be settled law. He thinks woman and people of color are fully human, just like white men.
It’s not a huge list of qualities that make someone a right-winger but not a massive insult and betrayal of everything the Supreme Court of the United States stands for and means.
And yet, they didn’t do this. Apparently they COULDN’T do this. They handed us Kavanugh, instead.
At the very LEAST:
- He has very possibly committed sexual assault and lied about it
- It has been suggested that there are more cases of assault in his history
- He lied under oath in 2004 and 2006
- He accepted stolen goods
- He has serious financial disclosure issues about that $200,000
- He may have a gambling problem
- He may be a drunk who is not in recovery
- He lied under oath in 2018
- He has a record so TOXIC the GOP doesn’t DARE release it to the American people.
Any ONE of these should be an automatic disqualifier. Several of them mean he should, at the minimum, be disbarred and, quite possibly, sent to jail.
At the very least, respect for law and the Constitution, not to mention the SCOTUS itself, demands an investigation needs to be undertaken to determine the veracity of these disqualifiers. Frankly, that should have been done before his name was put forward.
But the GOP decided they have absolute power, that they can run roughshod over the Constitution and the nation with impunity.
But were there NO conservative judges of good moral character with records that could be released to the American people without scandal?
What the hell is wrong with the GOP that NOT ONE person, man or woman, currently serving in a senior position as a United States judge, could be presented to the American people openly and without lies and prevarication?
Are there NO good people in the GOP?
Are there only criminals and liars in the GOP?
What the hell is wrong with the GOP?
