When the Warren Court pulled this country out of the dark ages the light blinded and traumatized the religious right so much that it is still enraged. “How dare those godless commies on the Supreme Court insist on a secular government! How dare they take God out of the schools, the town squares, and all other public places! And whose God did they remove? Our God, the Christian God; the one and only true God. How Dare they (those God damned commies and pagans) change our holy days into holidays! Merry Christmas, you damned heathens!”
The religious right wingers (particularly evangelical Protestants) are always the victims! They do not care about the first amendment or the separation of church and state. If they cannot use the power of the state to inflict their religion on you they think their religious freedom is being violated. That is why they have been obsessed with the supreme court since the nineteen sixties.
It has often been said that the worst from of government is a theocracy because theocrats will justify as the will of God any act they want to commit regardless of how heinous that act may be. Now that the Republican Party has empowered them, the religious fanatics are demanding a jihad that will pack the Supreme Court with regressive, repressive, destructive hypocrites who want to inflict on us a corporate theocracy that will violate our civil rights in the name of God while exploiting the hell out us in the name of free enterprise. Thus we find the Republican demagogues, Mitch McConnell and Charles Grassley to name a few, holding up the nomination of Merrick Garland for over a year without even granting him a hearing, and doing away with the filibuster (which the Republicans abused for over six years) in order to pack the federal courts, including the Supreme Court, with right wing extremists who in no way reflect the values or desires of the vast majority of this country. All of this they, the Republicans, are doing in the name of conservative Christian values -- not in the name of democracy.
The bottom line is that the Republicans have changed the rules of the Senate to obliterate any need or reason to compromise, and in doing so they have broken Senate and delegitimized the Supreme Court as well as the entire federal court system. Mitch McConnell tried to justify not even granting Merrick Garland a hearing by saying the people should decide who gets to appoint the next Supreme court justice. But McConnell has also said, “the court belongs to us,” meaning the Republicans. In other words, the Democrats should never be allowed to appoint a justice to the Supreme Court. Furthermore, it does not matter if a prospective Supreme Court Justice has sexually harassed women (ala Clarence Thomas) or attempted to rape a woman (ala Brett Kavanaugh) as long as that prospective justice faithfully represents the interests of the oligopoly and suppresses in the name of God many of the personal liberties guaranteed to us by the Constitution of the United States! The real reason why the Republicans refuse to let the FBI investigate the allegations against Judge Kavanaugh by Dr. Blasey-Ford or to allow Mark Judge or any witnesses to testify at Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing is because the Republicans do not care whether the allegations against Mr. Kavanaugh are true or not. It is that simple and that despicable!
Wake up America! This is not just politics. The Republicans have made this an all out war, and the survival of American democracy depends on the outcome! I honestly believe that the peril to this country posed by the Republican Party and Donald Trump is as grave as the threat posed to us by WWII! All representative democracies depend on the good faith of the competing interests and parties, and that good faith is what the Republicans have destroyed. In dong so they have made compromise and negotiation impossible. I feel sorry for the real Christians and real conservatives who are suffering from this tribal perversion of their faith and/or their ideology! I hope they will all join us to defeat the threat and save democracy. I am longing to restore the concept of the loyal opposition again, and with it a two party system that once more puts the best interests of this country first. As much as I hate to tell this to my Republican friends, I am afraid it my require the founding of a new conservative party to make such a restoration possible.
