In late 2016, Sen. Lindsey Graham confirmed that his campaign's email account had been hacked into by Russian actors. You can take that information or leave it, but after that announcement was made Graham coincidentally began to drift farther and farther in his rabid support of whatever Donald Trump said or did on any particular occasion and in his own insistence that the government was being terribly cruel to Donald Trump in investigating whether or not the campaign of Russian espionage had a link, or multiple links, into Trump's inner circle. For reasons.
At this point, however, the ever-television-ready Lindsey is off the rails completely. He has turned himself willingly and, apparently, eagerly into a conspiracy-minded nut who shares more in common with House saboteurs like Devin Nunes than once-allies like the late Sen. John McCain, nut who rants about "coups" by the Justice Department and malevolent plots by FBI officials to send rude notes to each other and whatever else you've got.
Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) said Sunday he believes “a bureaucratic coup” led by enemies of President Trump is taking place at the Justice Department, and the senator asked that a new special counsel be appointed to investigate. [...]
“Before the election, the people in question tried to taint the election, tip it to Clinton’s favor; after the election, they’re trying to undermine the president,” Graham said. He added that he did not know “what Rosenstein did, but I know what McCabe or Page and Strzok did. They tried to destroy this president. If Rosenstein’s involved, he should be fired. If he’s not involved, leave him alone.’’
Indeed, Graham took to Fox News to demand that a special counsel to be appointed to investigate the FBI's meanness toward Trump, and I sincerely wish we were joking on that one.
Just to make sure everyone was clear on just how far into the fumes ol' Lindsey was, he followed up this morning with a further Donald-fluffing, tweeting of the multiple sexual assault allegations against Trump Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh: "When it comes to stopping Pres @realDonaldTrump and his agenda there seem to be no boundaries," warning that "we are witnessing" the "total collapse of the traditional confirmation process for a Supreme Court nominee" and demanding a vote "soon" after next Thursday's hearings.
His tweets indicate that his loyalty to Kavanaugh's cause is primarily motivated by that being what Donald Trump wants, or at least he sees the opposition to Kavanaugh as being entirely motivated by opposition to Trump. That's mildly intriguing, in that once again it appears Graham is himself concerned primarily with supporting whatever Trump wants and opposing whatever he doesn't—even when the good of the party could likely be better served by ditching the seemingly doomed current nominee and replacing him with another of the literally dozens of other candidates who could be relied upon to write the exact same conservative opinions in the exact same conservative ways.
Which is odd behavior for a man who both previously opposed Trump himself and publicly thought him to be a joke of a candidate. Perhaps something changed. Or perhaps Lindsey Graham, the remora ever-looking for the next host to attach himself to, simply sees more opportunities for fame and television time and Very Important Golf Outings as someone who supports Trump wholeheartedly than as someone who has a scrap of common sense.
