Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley’s upset of 10-term Rep. Mike Capuano, in the Democratic primary for Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District, was a surprising and moving moment for many. Rep. Mike Capuano was a progressive Democrat, but the voters in the 7th Congressional District, whether they were annoyed by the outdated crankiness of Capuano in the face of social change, or, after 20 years with Capuano, were just simply ready to give someone else a chance, made history Tuesday. With an almost assured victory this November, Pressley will become the first-ever woman of color to represent Massachusetts in Congress.
