Is Jon Kyl currently eligible to be a Senator from Arizona?
We know that former Senator Kyl was a legitimate resident of Arizona during his three terms as a Congressman (1987-1995) and then as a Senator from 1994-2012, when he retired. When he left the Senate he became a partner in the Washington, DC law firm of Covington and Burling, whose U.S. offices are in the District of Columbia, New York and California. But not Arizona. At that firm he serves as both an attorney and as a lobbyist.
So where does Kyl live? It’s unlikely that he can still claim Arizona as his residence if he’s regularly working in DC. Since he once resided in Arizona, he may still have some sort of home there. But it is probably not his principal residence since his office is in DC. However, it is fair to note that until yesterday, he was probably semi-retired (age 76) and is wealthy enough to have more than one address. So there is some uncertainty.
So do any of the Kossacks have actual knowledge of: a. Kyl’s principal residence? b. if he no longer resides in Arizona, is he ineligible to be one of its senators?
If he is ineligible, he should be barred from sitting in the Senate. If barred, he could not participate in the Kavanaugh hearings or vote on his appointment. And that would be a good thing.
If anyone knows the answers, please post them for the world to see.
