The NY Times today published an anonymous op-ed from a senior Trump official, acknowledging that the move is a “rare step” and that the individual is a senior Trump administration official “whose identity is known to us”.
In this editorial, the anonymous Trump staffer claims she/he that Trump is unaware of this mole-like resistance within the White House.
“The dilemma — which he does not fully grasp — is that many of the senior officials in his own administration are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.”
The anonymous writer then goes on the claim that she/he wants the administration to succeed, but is alarmed at Trump’s dismissal of democratic institutions and amorality that guides his decisions.
From the White House to executive branch departments and agencies, senior officials will privately admit their daily disbelief at the commander in chief’s comments and actions. Most are working to insulate their operations from his whims.
Meetings with him veer off topic and off the rails, he engages in repetitive rants, and his impulsiveness results in half-baked, ill-informed and occasionally reckless decisions that have to be walked back.
“There is literally no telling whether he might change his mind from one minute to the next,” a top official complained to me recently, exasperated by an Oval Office meeting at which the president flip-flopped on a major policy decision he’d made only a week earlier.
This anonymous staffer also claims that discussions were had regarding removing Trump using the 25th Amendment, but no one wanted to trigger that constitutional crisis (mconvente note — as if we aren’t already in one...)
I don’t think this person deserves any kind of Profile in Courage. You want to ensure that Trump doesn’t destroy more of American democracy than he already has? Put your money where your mouth is and leak election campaign strategy documents to Democratic Super PACs in 2020. Doesn’t have to be directly to the Dem nominee, since we aren’t traitors like Trump, with all his Russian connections, but these “adults in the room” need to do more than they currently are come 2020 campaign season.
Who do you think the senior official may be?
