Isn’t it interesting how nobodies like us seem to know more about what the Trump administration is up to than the leader of the House of Representatives? At least that’s been the case with Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan, who never, ever seems to know shit about anything happening under his watch. The latest example, the administration’s ongoing war on migrant kids.
Recent reports indicate officials are seeking to eviscerate standards that protect migrant children under U.S. custody, in order to keep them locked up indefinitely. Ryan has the power to intervene here—if he only knew about the plan, apparently. "Just heard about it this morning,” the gutless wonder told The New York Times yesterday. “My position's been really clear about this: we should not be separating people at the border.”
But 416 migrant kids are still separated from their families and remain under U.S. custody, including 14 kids age 5 and under. "I believe that the administration also agrees—from the people I've spoken with in the administration—we shouldn't be separating families at the border,” he continued. Lies, lies, lies, because the administration has blatantly violated a reunification order for over 40 days now. They don’t care, and neither does Ryan.
Ryan has always had the power to stop family separation and other abuses happening at the hands of federal immigration agents, and he has done nothing. That’s included ignoring House legislation that would have blocked the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from tearing families apart at the border. “My position's been really clear about this,” Ryan continued, “we should not be separating people at the border.”
Nah, your position has always been the same: issuing a half-assed statement supposedly opposing some jerk move from Donald Trump, and then doing nothing even though you’re the fucking leader of the House. And if by chance a reporter catches you off-guard, there’s the trusty fall-back: I haven’t heard about that! But the fact is that Paul Ryan can’t wash his hands of this and is as complicit as they come—and the last day of his term can’t come any faster.
Republicans are complicit in everything Trump does. Can you help take back the House and Senate by giving $1 to each of Daily Kos' endorsed candidates?
