Maine Senator Susan Collins refuses to take a stance on Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination, and pro-choice activists are working around the clock to change that, according to the Associated Press.
Liberal groups are running TV ads encouraging the senator to reject the nomination.
People from across the country have mailed about 3,000 coat hangers to her office, symbolizing back-alley abortions that took place before they became legal.
And activists have pledged to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund an opponent to Collins if she votes in favor of the president’s nomination. She is up for re-election in 2020.
Three. Thousand. Coat hangers.
Sen. Collins, of course, loves to be the swing vote center of attention, it seems, and keeps finding a way to look elsewhere as mounting evidence of Kavanaugh’s anti-abortion attitudes continue to surface. Despite building a reputation as a pro-abortion rights kind of Senator, Collins claims she doesn’t “see the point” of people’s concern over a 2003 email, where Kavanaugh states that SCOTUS could “overrule its own precedent,” in the context of abortion rights.
Collins said she hadn’t read the email herself, but that, based on what she knows about it, it might not be the bombshell Democrats are hoping it would be.
[...]
Collins said in a follow-up that she would review the Kavanaugh email over the weekend. She’s said she would oppose a nominee who demonstrates “hostility” to Roe v. Wade, but said that, after meeting privately with Kavanaugh in August, he had done nothing to make her think he was hostile and told her that the decision is “settled law.”
You can check out one of NARAL’s great messages to Susan Collins below, and be sure to do what you can to help Sen. Collins take a stand, wherever you are. Without her “No” (and Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski’s), Kavanaugh’s a shoo-in.
