According to the AP (a ! all by itself) via Yahoo! News, the Republican Party in Texas yesterday rejected a demand to oust a vice chairman simply because he’s Muslim.
“The executive committee of the Tarrant County Republican Party voted 139-49 to reject the effort to purge Shahid Shafi, a surgeon and City Council member in suburban Fort Worth.”
As Mr. Shafi later said:
“The Thursday vote result took a stand ‘against bigotry of all kinds,’ he said. ‘Our union is a little more perfect today.’ “
But of course there had to be some drama:
“The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported at least one precinct chair, Arlington Republican Dale Attebery, was said have to tossed his ID at the lecturn [sic] after the vote. [Republican Party Chair Darl] Easton said he accepted that as Attebery's resignation.”
Gotta admit, though, that I’d like to have seen more meat about the actual demands. I have to wonder if they weren’t along the lines of what this Roy Moore spokesman said about the good judge’s claim that Muslims can’t hold office in the US:
We now return you to your expected GOP activities.
