It’s been amply established that by going all-in for Trump, the religious right has revealed itself to be morally bankrupt. But just how deep that bankruptcy runs was demonstrated in full this past week. One of Trump’s most obnoxious fundie supporters revealed that he has no qualms about going all-in for a congressman who blows racist freight train whistles, and also has no problem with Trump recklessly putting Nancy Pelosi in danger.
Lance Wallnau is probably best known as one of the main theoreticians of the New Apostolic Reformation, the overtly fascist offshoot of the religious right that seeks to bring about the Second Coming by taking over the world. Specifically, he is one of the leading minds behind the “Seven Mountains strategy”—the idea that Christians, under the leadership of living “apostles” and “prophets,” must take over the forces, or mountains, that influence our culture in order to pave the way for Jesus’ return.
Not surprisingly, like most NAR folks, Wallnau has been an especially vocal supporter of Trump. It’s led him, like most fundies, to condone the almost daily outrages coming from this White House. But recent days have shown just how much Wallnau is willing to condone.
For instance, earlier this week, he was one of the first to sign a letter Janet “Heartbeat Bill” Porter drafted to the House Republican Leadership demanding that Steve King be reinstated to his committee assignments. Read the letter here. It claims that Kevin McCarthy, Steve Scalise and Liz Cheney have given in to a “media-manufactured assault” against “an outstanding member of Congress.”
So in signing this letter, Wallnau is throwing his weight behind “an outstanding member of Congress” who has no qualms about effectively yelling “You will not replace us!” He’s throwing his weight behind a guy who thinks there’s something wrong with white nationalism being considered a bad thing. He’s throwing his weight behind a guy who called Mexican immigrants “dirt.” Says a lot about Wallnau, doesn’t it?
But Wallnau wasn’t done yet. You may recall that Lindsey Graham was one of a good number of Republicans who ripped Trump for canceling Nancy Pelosi’s government jet for her planned fact-finding trip to Afghanistan.
Wallnau’s response? He urged his followers to crash Graham’s inbox. No, this isn’t snark.
Well, that’s interesting. Apparently Wallnau doesn’t want you to know that by outing Pelosi’s travel plans, Trump exposed a trip that was supposed to be kept secret for a very good reason. Let’s say it nice and slow—you never publicly announce plans to travel to a war zone. Indeed, Pelosi was forced to scrap her plan to fly commercial after being advised the risk was took great.
So is Wallnau calling for Graham to stand by Trump even though he engaged in behavior that was petty at best and rose to the level of reckless endangerment at worst? Apparently so.
Ladies and gentlemen, the moral bankruptcy of the religious right in the Trump era, in a nutshell. I’ve taken to calling Wallnau “Lance Armstrong Wallnau” because he has often revealed that he shares Lance Armstrong’s lack of scruples. This is more proof.
