For almost an hour the Covington students were nothing more than an unruly, disorganized group of teenagers oblivious to the drama surrounding them. Then the chaperone gave permission to chant. The group was instantly transformed into a mob. Only Mr. Phillips recognized this and risked his own safety to step forward as a man of faith. What’s not being said is that his sacrifice was successful. His action changed the direction of the mob’s energy from toward the BHI to him. The dangerous tipping point subsided. The chaperones stepped back in and the boys got on the bus. Mr. Phillips is an example of what faith leaders should be.
