Air traffic controllers have been unpaid for a month now and have been sounding the alarm: The government shutdown is threatening the financial security and emotional well-being of already overworked air traffic controllers, and that is creating a threat to the security of all Americans traveling the friendly skies.
As of today, the FAA has cancelled all flights into New York City’s LaGuardia Airport, one of the busiest airports in the nation. Air traffic controllers have stopped showing up to work unpaid.
Folks, this is the beginning of the end of the Trump shutdown. The commerce of the United States will be crippled without air travel. Shout-out to the air traffic controllers for standing their ground.
Update: CNN reports Newark and Philadelphia airports are also experiencing dramatic delays and canceled flights.

Early reports said all flights into LaGuardia were being halted, they eventually green-lighted those flights and things appear to be operating normally, with delays still being reported at Newark and LaGuardia. I’ve spoken to an air traffic controller who is begrudgingly at work doing his/her job because they are a dedicated public servant. They said these are being passed around today in lieu of actual paychecks.
