I don’t watch a lot of TV actually ON the television; no, I’m a Netflix or Amazon Prime bingewatcher (Note: American Gods on Starz is an exception, I will be excitedly waiting for every episode when it starts up again!). Generally late to the hype party, but I get to watch one or three seasons all at once sans commercials, and that’s a win for me. Episodes are faster, and I know not to get too attached if it’s only one season!
I recently finished Season 3 of The Magicians (I see that Season 4 is airing on SyFy, do NOT spoil it for me I beg of you!) and am working my way through Season 2 of Lucifer. What both of these have in common is a moment during at least one episode where one or more cast members sang. It got me thinking about Actors Who Sing, and from there to other songs featured as original or cover versions in television or movies. I’m in the mood for some music tonight, so grab whatever beverage suits you tonight, hop across the story break after reading our nightly description of what Top Comments is and how YOU can be a part of it (and if you’d ever like to do more, consider becoming one of our diarists. PLEASE drop me a line for info!!)...
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
-Lucifer — All Along The Watchtower — Tom Ellis sang this Bob Dylan tune as the closing song of the Season 2 premiere. He’s said that while the vocals are his own, the piano is not. However, he DOES play guitar, as can be seen in his cover of U2’s With Or Without You.
- The Magicians — Under Pressure — The cast did a stellar job with this song in Season 3 Episode 9. The show’s featured singing cast before (see: One Day More, from S2:E9), and I hope there’s more of it!
- The Flash/Arrow/Supergirl/Legends of Tomorrow — Put A Little Love In Your Heart — The four-show musical crossover episode officially known S3:E17 knocked my heretofore favorite musical TV episode, BtVS’s Once More With Feeling, down a peg (not that it’s not good, mind you… see below!). From the Jackie DeShannon cover and Frank Loesser’s More I Cannot Wish You to Rachel Bloom’s gorgeous original Runnin’ Home To You, the entire episode is gorgeous. While yes, with four seriesthey were able to cherry pick a musically talented ensemble for these numbers, it doesn’t diminish what a fantastic episode it was. Let’s be honest… it had John Barrowman in it. ‘nuff said.
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer — Until 2017, the episode Once More With Feeling stood as the single best musical episode of any series I’d ever seen (YMMV, of course) and I still think it’s a better episode overall — it wasn’t JUST “lets have them sing!”. The entire episode full of original songs is worth re-watching (you HAVE seen it already, right? Right?!) but here’s one of my favorites with almost the entire cast, Where Do We Go From Here? Did you know there are live stage versions of this, too?
- Ally McBeal — I admit it was Google that reminded me of this delicious piece of TV history, when in S4:E20 Robert Downey Jr and Sting sang Every Breath You Take as a duet. But I’m glad Google did :).
- Glee — Yes, I know, the whole bloody series was song covers. That doesn’t mean they weren’t occasionally really, really good. Such as Cee Lo Green’s Forget You and Gwyneth Paltrow doing Joan Jett’s Do You Wanna Touch Me?
- Walk The Line — Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon did all the vocals. They’re poignant and real. Like Folsom Prison Blues.
So what songs do you remember from TV or movies? Please share in the comments! Then enjoy what you really come here for, the trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Comments we deliver every night! Thank you to BeninSC for making it all happen tonight!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.

In Marissa Higgins’s diary about a GOP official’s objection to Senator Sinema’s ‘attire,’ in this comment, drcraigphd makes the point that most needs making.
