Having done an orange search thingy and finding no results, I decided to jump in and introduce this community to the person many of us hope will be the next US Senator from Colorado, Trish Zornio.
In a nutshell, Trish is a progressive millennial, Democrat, scientist, researcher, teacher, lecturer and a musician, all wrapped up in one person. She brings a youthful/millennial perspective to many issues important to us all, such as women’s rights, gun safety, climate change, education, health care, and government responsibility.
Trish has a bio which you can read on her Facebook page or her webpage, but I wanted to give my personal perspective.
I first met Trish in person almost a year ago, when she was still “exploring”. I was fortunate enough to be able to set up a little meet/greet at a restaurant nearby, and about 25 of us had a really fun evening getting to know her, finding out why she wants to run for the Senate, and why it’s so important that she run and win. We had a wide ranging discussion, pretty much didn’t leave out any social issues or any other (then) current events. Everyone peppered her with questions, and she handled all of them with ease.
Trish was raised in a rural Republican family and as a result, she knows how to talk about important issues without resorting to buzzwords that aren’t effective with the right wing communities. She can reach across the urban-rural divide with ease and effectiveness — extremely important here in Colorado with our concentrated urban centers surrounded by a whole lot of rural ranch land, small communities, and just plain awesome, beautiful countryside.
Recently, she just finished a tour of all 64 Colorado counties — basically unheard of for someone exploring for a US Senate run here. Once she completed that all-counties tour, and the 2018 midterms were behind us, she announced that she was running, on January 19, 2019. She was able to garner a lot of interest and support while making her way across these 64 counties, and made a lot of friends along the way!
If she can win what will almost certainly be a very competitive primary, she’ll take on sitting Senator Cory Gardner, who just announced his endorsement for...Donald Trump. Wow. We can do better. Way better.
Now that she’s announced her candidacy, Trish will need financial support. She’s taking donations here.
You can give her a Twitter follow here. All of our new Democratic candidates need their messages amplified, and Trish would love the follows, likes and RTs she’ll need to get her voice heard.
Lastly, I don’t claim to represent or speak for the Zornio campaign - I’m just an enthusiastic supporter. I really think it’s way past time we had a young woman representing us in the US Senate. Colorado has never had a female US Senator, and I think that 2020 is the year we can and must change that sad fact. It’s also way past time we had a scientist representing us in the US Senate. As Trish’s website says…
SCIENTISTS ON THE U.S. SENATE SCIENCE COMMITTEE: 0 WOMEN EVER ELECTED TO THE U.S. SENATE BY COLORADO: 0 MILLENNIALS IN THE U.S. SENATE: 0
IT DOESN’T TAKE A SCIENTIST TO DO THIS MATH…
No one is under any illusions that the 2020 Colorado Democratic primaries are going to be a cake walk. A lot of the “rank and file” Democrats are waiting to see what “big name” candidates announce, and I understand that. However...I think it’s time for change, and if we want change, we need to look to a new generation of leaders. We need more women in the Senate, and we need a younger perspective if we’re to make progress on a whole host of issues. Moving the deck chairs around into better arrangements is ok, but if we want lasting change, we need people like Trish to help move us forward.
If you agree, please consider giving her your support. Thanks!
