I had a different diary I was going to put out tonight...until I woke up this morning to another episode of Storm Tossed!
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let
people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

So far, this winter’s been crappy as hell!! It seems to be lurching from storm to storm with a small breathing space in between. Yesterday’s storm was almost as bad as the one two weeks ago. People mostly didn’t lose power this time and the winds weren’t quite as bad, but the rain was bad enough to cause flooding in some rivers on the east side of Vancouver Island. It pelted rain all day yesterday and on into the night. And then, sometime early this morning the wind picked up around here. But what we got was nothing compared to the rest of the Island!!
It all began two days ago with heavy rainfall...some 120 mm ( 4.5 inches) fell flooding roads and swelling rives, creeks and ditches and toppling trees.
Many trails were closed due to mudslides wiping out parts of trails. There were mudslides on the main roads as well: Highway 18 had to close due to mudslides, but opened again yesterday. The Island Highway was treacherous between Nanaimo and Victoria.
This is how much rain fell and where:
A few records were broken in rainfall totals.
Here’s yesterday’s news reports
Trees were down again...those the first storm didn’t get. several cars were smashed by them, and one person had to be rescued from their car which ran off the road, down a hill and smacked into a tree.
Wanna see a raging river? This is the Kennedy River between Port Alberni ( where I live) and Tofino/Ucluelet ( just an hour’s drive away towards the west coast)
I would NOT want to be driving near that!!
Down in Victoria, they were dealing with flooded sewers and closed beaches. Not fun or nice!
And to top it all off, since the storm has hit all of BC, there are avalanche warnings all over the province. So much fresh snow fell ( a foot to a foot and a half) on older, weaker snow. And there is another foot or more expected in the next two days. This danger does not usually happen until later in the winter when snow becomes more fragile due to age, thaws and refreezing.
Snowmobilers are a special danger with avalanches. The noise of the machines can trigger an avalanche.
Gawd!! I hope this is it for nasty winter weather, but seeing as how its the beginning of January when all the nasty and freezing crap happens, I doubt it. I still have some person’s ridge cap sitting in my yard. It delivered itself to my back yard two weeks ago and nobody’s claimed it yet.
