I’m no longer a football fan. Lots of reasons. But occasionally I’ll watch a game. I’ve got the Clemson/Auburn college football championship game on. Anything to avoid more Trump coverage. Plus, it’s being played not far away in Silicon Valley so that’s interesting especially the part about how ticket prices went down over the week leading up to the game. Around here, folks have other things to do.
So, the first thing I hated about this particular game: the National Anthem. Note to singer; the National Anthem is a march, not a dirge. It’s an up tempo tune. Don’t drag it out. It’s bad enough that the Anthem has been turned into an homage to militarism rather than to America and Americans and the enduring spirit of democracy
Second thing: While the Anthem was being played cameras on the sidelines dollied along rows of smiling cheerleaders. I might have missed it, but I didn’t see anything but white examples of the heavily-made-up genre. If you were out on the streets around Lev’s stadium at lunchtime you’d have seen a pretty good mix of people of many beautiful colors. I’m more comfortable with that.
The game has been on for 12 minutes and each team has scored, so it’s got that, but I’m sure I’ll find more to hate soon. Already the know-it-all announcers are grating on me.
Start of the second quarter, I have to admit, it’s a fun game to watch. Lots of scoring. (I keep hearing snippets of the Steely Dan song in my head, not sure whether I hate that or not).
