Fort Brown was originally called “Fort Texas”—it was a temporary camp set up by General Zachary Taylor when he was ordered to the disputed border with Mexico (which started the Mexican-American War). After an exchange of cannon fire, it was renamed Fort Brown in honor of the commander who was killed. After the Mexican War, Fort Brown was strengthened and served as a base to protect the border. In the Civil War it was occupied at various times by both Federals and Confederates, and it served as a training base in WW1 and WW2. Today, the Fort’s buildings house the Texas Southmost College.
Some photos from a walk around the campus.
For those who don’t know, I live in a campervan and travel around the country, posting photo diaries of places I visit.
