I think some movies should have reviews here on Daily Kos. Not necessarily because they’re good. Terrible movies like Rambo: Last Blood (came out last month) should have reviews here on Daily Kos.
To help Daily Kos community members who might be interested in writing a review of a recent movie that might be of interest to the Daily Kos readership, I’ve been posting listings of movies that are coming out.
Each movie gets at least a little line describing what it’s about. But the movies that I think might be of interest to Daily Kos readers, those get a little more said about them.
Even with that criterion spelled out, there’s room for bias. For example, I don’t care much for horror movies in general. If I had to choose between a run-of-the-mill horror movie and a run-of-the-mill action thriller, I’d probably choose the latter.
This is part of the reason I’ve been wanting to get other people writing these listings of upcoming movies. I have prepared a Google doc with listings of upcoming movies through December. For most it’s just titles and whether it’s wide or limited release.
Anyone on here who wants to do one of these can just let me know a date and I can send him or her the listing, then they write it up according to their own perceptions of what they think Daily Kos readers will find interesting.
These are not reviews. A reviewer should see the movie from beginning to end, and if not, they should clearly indicate why not (e.g., Independence Day: Resurgence is clearly a bad movie from the first ten or twenty minutes).
The point of a review isn’t to say you must go see a certain movie, nor to forbid you from seeing it. Rather, it is to convince you that you should or should not go see it. Sometimes you’ll be convinced, sometimes you won’t.
The movies listed below are movies that are coming out today. I haven’t seen anything more of them than the trailer and ads on TV. The point here is to convince you to look further into some of these movies.
Maybe you watch the trailer and decide you’re not interested. Or maybe you watch the trailer, you buy a ticket, you see the movie, and you decide to write a review and post it here on Daily Kos.
If you write a review about one of these, please send a message to Movie Review Group so we can reblog it.
The Addams Family — Computer animated movie about the classic sitcom of the same title. Voice cast includes Allison Janney.
Along Came the Devil 2 — A demonic force takes over a small town, and the reverend might be the only one who can break the spell. This is a sequel? Might be better than God’s Not Dead 2. Limited release.
Beloved Beast — A mental patient escapes the institution to follow in his dead brother’s murderous footsteps. Limited release.
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie — I probably shouldn’t repeat the blurb for this one lest I get accused of giving spoilers. Not that I could deliberately. All I know about the Breaking Bad TV series is what I’ve seen in parodies. Netflix only.
The Current War — This movie was first exhibited at a few film festivals back in 2017. Then it was shelved because of Weinstein scandal, and forgotten until this year, with screenings around the world. Looks like there will be a screening today at select locations.
Benedict Cumberbatch does a decent American accent as Thomas Edison. Looks quite interesting.
For now a limited release. Maybe the distributors will overcome the stain of the Weinstein Company, maybe they won’t.
The Dead Center — A man commits suicide, then his corpse comes to life and walks out of the morgue. A troubled doctor (Shane Carruth) becomes obsessed with the zombie, according to the blurb. But wouldn’t you be if you worked at a morgue and a corpse just walked out? Limited release.
Fractured — A man takes his daughter who just had an accident to a strange hospital. Could this be an extended commercial from the so-called “Doctor Patient Unity”? Just kidding. Netflix only.
Gemini Man — Will Smith stars as an elite assassin who may have just met his match.
High Strung: Free Dance — Dance movie with Jane Seymour in an important supporting rôle. At one point this was supposed to be a limited release, but apparently they decided to release it nationwide. It’s showing at the AMC Fairlane 21, so it might be showing at a theater near you.
Jexi — What if Siri tried to be like the computer in Her? She might be Jexi. The concept here is much more comedic. Jexi (Rose Byrne) fixes Phil (Adam Devine) up with Cate (Alexandra Shipp). But then the phone becomes insanely jealous of the woman.
Like High Strung: Free Dance, this one was changed from limited release to wide release and it’s showing at the AMC Fairlane 21, which is my barometer of how wide a release is.
Little Monsters — Technically came out Tuesday. A teacher, a musician and a celebrity team up to protect kids from zombies. Limited release.
The King — If you liked Timothée Chalamet in Call Me By Your Name, you might like him as a young Henry V in The King. Limited release.
Mary — Gary Oldman is a commercial captain who buys a new ship that turns out to be haunted. Limited release.
Parasite — An unemployed man living his relatives who are also unemployed gets a well-paid tutoring job. Might be interesting, might not be. Presumably in Korean with English subtitles. Limited release.
Polaroid — A high school student finds a mysterious Polaroid camera. Everyone whom she takes a picture of winds up meeting an untimely demise. Limited release.
The Sky Is Pink — Bollywood love story spanning several years. The only reason I find this one interesting is for how English is mixed into the dialogue. Limited release.
Union — A woman in the South disguises herself as her dead brother and joins the Confederate Army. Good or bad, this movie should have a Daily Kos review.
