As predicted by everyone, the Turkish incursion into Northern Syria has already displaced over 100,000 people and resulted in an unknown number of casualties from the bombing of civilian areas—in addition to raining mortar shells around a U.S. base. NBC News is now reporting that the days-old invasion has also resulted in “alleged atrocities” with Arab militias, backed by the Turkish forces, executing Kurds. U.S. military on the ground has reportedly confirmed these events.
The Pentagon is now worried that the actions are a prelude to widespread ethnic cleansing of the Kurds, as well as providing an opportunity for ISIS and other terrorist groups to reform in the Syria / Iran region. That sentiment seems to be shared by the Kurds. CNN reports that the leader of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces complained to a U.S. diplomat that America is “leaving us to be slaughtered” And, in terms that are hard to argue, the Kurdish leader added, “You have sold us. This is immoral.”
All because Donald Trump made one phone call to Turkish autocrat Recep Erdoğan and gave him the go-ahead. Which is another fantastic reason that every transcript of conversations between Trump and foreign leaders needs to be exhumed from improperly used secure servers and examined by both diplomatic and military experts.
