- My general locale is coastal northwest Washington state, a mix of habitats from shrubs to woods to roadside to beach overlook.
- New birds: 3. New total for me: 73
Sept 18: Bushtit
Sept 18: Hutton’s Vireo
Sept 30: Red-breasted Sapsucker
I wasn’t able to get a photo of that bird as it flew away as soon as I saw it, but it was unmistakable, a woodpecker with an all red head. This is a picture from a summer observation in a different year.
Please add your latest Birdrace update a comment below about who you’re seeing and any interesting behavior as we move out of breeding season. Any migrants coming or going? Seeing youngsters?

And of course as always, we welcome your notes about any aspect of nature in your area.
This diary is also The Daily Bucket for today.
What I’ve been noticing as we slide into fall is a return of winter birds, most of whom I haven’t seen for many moons. Loons and grebes. A few ducks. Most are still to arrive, but I’ve missed them. A group of 10 Hooded Mergansers showed up about a week ago, hens and youngsters. Eventually the drakes will appear.
Sure is nice to see some ducks back in the bays here.
The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge.
